You may think that strolling and kayaking cover the bases at Wascana Centre, but there’s always a surprise or two just around the corner. Here at Expedia Canada, we love finding out what’s beyond the bend, which is why we delved into the nine-square kilometer park to discover the unexpected ways to spend a day in Wascana Centre. Whether it’s your first time or 10th visit, hidden gems are ripe for discovery.
Jane Austen in Wascana
Most people forget that the Edna May Forbes Lady Slipper Courtyard is open for the public and not just wedding parties. The tree-lined area offers a sense of solitude, perfect for a quiet afternoon just for you. The gateway arbors and large pavilion give it a dream-like atmosphere, and is an ideal spot for an afternoon with your favourite book. Fun fact about the courtyard’s title: It’s named after the lady slipper flower, which blooms each spring in the park.
Goats!
Lawn mowers are so last season. The real magic happens with goats. Each summer, Wascana Centre Authority (WCA) partners with the Friends of Wascana Marsh (FOWM) to bring a herd of goats into the Wascana Centre Habitat Conservation Area. Roughly 100 goats roam, chew, and get rid of pesky weeds--especially Canada thistle which grows in abundance in the conservation area. If you have kids with you, they’ll love watching the cute little guys work.
Dinosaur Sighting
Turns out Canada is home to one lively robotic dinosaur named Megamunch. He lives in the Royal Saskatchewan Museum and is a favourite amongst small children in the centre. There are a number of other dinosaurs too, as you can see in the Life Sciences section. Learn about the big beasts that once roamed the Regina plains and discover what happened after they disappeared. The museum also includes exhibits about the First Nations people and humanity’s impact on the globe.
Street Skating at Skate Plaza
Wascana Centre isn’t all museums and books; there are also hardcore skating opportunities in the park. Test out your ollies and 360s at the Skate Plaza. What’s the difference between a skateboard park and a skate plaza, you ask? A skateboard park has a wealth of ramps, bowls, and half-pipes. A skate plaza incorporates urban elements like benches, rails, and ledges. Test it all out for yourself! Just remember to wear a helmet.
Ferry Boat Tour
You don’t need a parrot on your shoulder to cruise the waters of Wascana Centre. Sign up for a ferryboat tour. These 30-minute sessions take you and up to eight people around the grand Wascana Lake at a leisurely pace. You might even want to bring your camera to snap photos of the Provincial Legislative Building, lush landscape, and romantic benches along the way. It’s a vantage most people never get to see. Reservations are highly recommended.
When it comes to Wascana Centre, you can bring a date, your kids, or just enjoy some me time in the park. More than that, there’s always something yet to be discovered. Keep your eyes out for all of the unknown treasures waiting to be found.
